New At-Home Nasal Cooling Device Found Safe and Easy to Use for Migraine Relief

Migraine is a complex brain condition that causes severe headaches, making it hard for millions of people to work or go to school. While many people take pills, there is a big need for safe, drug-free treatments that can be used easily at home. Exciting new data from a recent Transnasal Evaporative Cooling Migraine Study Shows Relief is possible using an innovative, non-invasive method.

A new study published in the medical journal Headache looked at a specific tool called the Mi-Helper device. Because the clinical trial was done entirely remotely, researchers were able to prove that this technology is incredibly safe, easy to tolerate, and helpful for wiping out migraine pain right from a patient’s own living room.

How Does It Work?

The device works by blowing a gentle stream of dry, room-temperature air mixed with a fine mist of saltwater into the nose. This creates a natural cooling effect inside the nasal cavity. Scientists believe this cooling calms down specific nerve pathways behind the nose that trigger severe migraine pain and symptoms.

How the Study Was Done

The study took place across the United States between late 2023 and mid-2024.

The Participants: 137 adults who have suffered from migraines for at least a year took part. Most of the participants were women (79.6%).

The At-Home Setup: Patients didn’t go to a hospital. Instead, they were shipped a device, watched an instructional video, took a quiz to prove they knew how to use it, and used a smartphone app to track their symptoms at home.

The Settings: Patients were randomly split into groups to test different strengths, measured in liters of air per minute (L/min):

  • Low Flow: 4 L/min of dry air.
  • Medium Flow: 6 L/min of dry air.
  • High Flow: 10 L/min of dry air.
  • Fake Treatment (Sham Group): A weak, intermittent stream of regular air (2 L/min) used to see if the real settings actually worked better.

Study Results

The study brought back highly encouraging news about patient comfort, safety, and pain relief:

  • Nobody Quit Due to Discomfort: To measure how comfortable the device was, researchers tracked if anyone stopped their 15-minute session early. 0% of the participants quit early because of discomfort or nose irritation.
  • Very Few Side Effects: The device proved to be extremely safe. Only a tiny number of people reported mild issues like a runny nose (2.2%), nose irritation (1.5%), ear pressure (1.5%), or a sore throat (1.5%). All of these went away quickly on their own.
  • Better Pain Relief at Higher Settings: Two hours after using the device, the percentage of patients getting pain relief went up with the air strength. Relief was felt by 48.4% of the low-flow group, 61.8% of the medium-flow group, and 70.0% of the high-flow group.
  • Wiping Out Pain Completely: The best news came from the highest setting (10 L/min). Two hours after treatment, 33.3% of patients using the high-flow setting were completely free of pain, compared to only 12.1% of people in the fake treatment group.
  • Knocking Out Sensitive Symptoms: The highest setting also did a great job helping patients who were suffering from phonophobia (severe sensitivity to sound). Right after treatment, 36.0% of the high-flow group completely lost their sound sensitivity, compared to just 10.3% of the fake treatment group.

Conclusion

The study proved that cooling the inside of the nose is a safe, highly comfortable, and successful way to treat a single migraine attack at home. Because there were no dropouts and excellent signs of complete pain freedom at high flow rates, researchers are calling for larger clinical trials to fully confirm these therapeutic benefits so this drug-free device can help more people.
